MateBook Fold: an 18-inch hinge that does not leave China
Huawei put a new MateBook Fold on the China store: Extraordinary Master Edition, Kirin X90 Plus, HarmonyOS 6.1. Unfolded it is an 18-inch dual-layer LTPO OLED at 3,296 × 2,472 (4:3). Folded it becomes 2,472 × 1,648 (3:2). Battery is 74.69Wh. Configs go to 32GB RAM and 2TB.
Street open in China: CNY 24,999 for 24GB / 512GB — call it about $3,700 before tax and grey-market tax. 24 + 1TB is CNY 26,999. 32 + 2TB is CNY 29,999. That is book-price hardware, not a student laptop.
Desk filter: the silicon and the OS are the product. Kirin plus HarmonyOS 6.1 means no Google stack to assume. If your work is Docs, Play, and a US Microsoft 365 tenant, this is a second machine, not a replacement ThinkPad. If your work is a China-side studio or a closed Harmony desk, the 18-inch 4:3 panel is the reason to care — one slate that sits like a drawing board.
We have not had one in a room. Hinge rattle, crease under studio lights, and real battery at 100% brightness are untested. Do not buy a grey-import unit for a production kit until someone you trust unfolds it for a week.
