The Mini is not free. The rental seat got wider.
PCMag reported that SpaceX appears to have opened the “claim a Starlink Mini” rental to every active Residential plan, not just Residential Max. SpaceX did not comment. The storefront still talks like Max is special. That gap is the story.
Buy the Mini and you are in the $199–$249 hardware lane. The perk is a loaner: you claim it from an email, not from a banner on Starlink.com. Miss the survey and you do not have a Mini. That is not a price cut. That is inventory with a form in front of it.
What changed, if the emails are real: 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps Residential seats now get the same claim path Max had. What did not change: Roam pricing still follows the Residential plan you keep. Upgrade or drop that plan and the Roam rate moves with it. Non-Max users were already looking at a smaller Roam discount than Max.
For a Texas roof or a West Africa last-mile test, treat this as a second terminal you do not own. Good for a trip or a backup dish. Bad as the only path if the perk disappears the next time capacity is tight — it already paused once this summer.
Desk rule: do not budget a “free Mini.” Budget hardware you can keep if the email stops. If the claim button lands, take the loaner and keep receipts.
